Italian Post Office Opens a New Hub Facility

The Italian President Sergio Mattarella joined the Italian Post Office for the unveiling of a new logistics center in Bologna, focused solely on e-commerce management. This is the Post Office’s largest hub in Italy to date; the real estate module was built by Prologis at the Bologna freight village (Interporto) in just eleven months. The Post Office then completed the automation part in six months to enable operations to begin.

This new logistics platform is at the vanguard of logistics real estate, stretching over an area of 75,000 square meters, approximately 23,600 of which are covered, and has 182 loading bays. The facility has been built to blend in harmoniously with its surrounding, using low consumption LED lamps and photovoltaic panels spread out over an area of 5,500 square meters. This meets daytime demand and has reduced CO2 emissions by 250,000 tons. The Italian Post Office's new hub also boasts a LEED® Gold sustainability certification and employs around 600 people.

The platform has been tailor-made (build-to-suit) by Prologis to enable the Italian Post Office to manage new-generation logistics and has a brand new sorting system (sorter) developed by Lonate Pozzolo's CML. This sorts packages based on weight, size, and destination. Thanks to this high standard of automation, the Italian Post Office will be able to handle up to 250,000 deliveries a day from its new Bologna hub.
